Interpol Launches Massive Clampdown on Cybercrime in Africa

In an unprecedented move, Interpol, in collaboration with Afripol, the policing organization of the African Union, successfully conducted a sweeping cybercrime operation that resulted in the arrest of over 1,000 individuals across 19 African countries. This operation, aptly named Operation Serengeti, spanned from September 2 to October 31. The operation was meticulously planned to target an array of cybercrimes including ransomware, digital extortion, online scams, and phishing schemes, highlighting the growing sophistication and reach of cybercriminals in today’s digital world.

Dramatically, in Senegal, eight individuals, including five Chinese nationals, were apprehended for orchestrating an online Ponzi scheme affecting over 1,800 victims. A man in Nigeria was also accused of masterminding online investment scams related to cryptocurrency, profiting an excess of $300,000.

The operation also unveiled the haunting intersection of human trafficking and cybercrime. In Cameroon, authorities dismantled a nefarious group accused of human trafficking across seven countries. This group cynically exploited individuals by promising them employment opportunities only to ensnare them into a multilayered marketing scam. Victims were cruelly manipulated to recruit others into the scheme as a means of securing their freedom, painting a grim picture of the fusion between digital and human exploitation.
